Institutional profile
University of Zagreb is the oldest and the largest university in SE Europe. It was established in 1874 (with roots in the three-year high-school Neoacademia Zagrabiensis established in 1669).
It has approximately 60.000 students and 6000 teaching staff.
Lectures in Science (Mineralogy and Geology) started in 1876 and present day Faculty of Science was formed in 1946.
Today, Faculty of Science has more than 300 teaching staff and approximately 3500 students studying mathematics, physics,
chemistry, biology, geology, geography and geophysics in graduate and postgraduate studies.
Within the frame of newly established postgraduate studies in Science teaching, first attempts in introducing Science communication
have been done.
Since 1999 the researchers involved, entered into the field of Public Understanding of Science and Science communication raising
the interest and organizing conference on science and society and workshops on science and the media, and medicine and technology
and the media. According to reactions and information given from the participants they raised the interest and understanding of the
science-society relations.
The book "Znanost i javnost”. i.e. Science and Public (ed. Blanka Jergovic) resulting from presentations at those conferences is
obligatory literature at the postgraduate program on Science teaching at the Faculty of Science.
