Institutional profile

The Université Denis Diderot – Paris 7 was born in 1970 together with 13 amongst the 17 universities of the Ile-de-France. It took the name Denis Diderot in 1994 as a clear indication of its willingness to propote a multidisciplinary approach of science. Its teaching and research staff includes 2719 people and 1100 workers in the administration of the university. 25000 students are registered at the university in three main fields : 1) mathematics and natural science, 2) medicine, 3) social sciences and humanities.
The Department CCI was founded at the end of the 80s thanks to the conjunction of audiovisual studies and scientific communication. The curriculum in scientific journalism was created in 1990. Only students with a strong scientific background are allowed to register in this programme. There is a two-years undergraduate programme called ICST (Information et communication scientifique et technique) and a one-year post-graduate professional training in scientific journalism. About eighty students are attending the different courses offered by the department each year.
The Department is involved in different research programmes in scientific communication together with the Centre Alexandre Koyré in EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and with a research team of the ENS-LSH of Lyon. Negociations are going on with the CELSA (Université Paris 4, Sorbonne) for future collaborations in teaching. The Department co-ordinated one of the modules (Science controversies) of the European Network of Science Communication Teachers (ENSCOT) the prototype for ESCW.
