The Grup de Difusió de la Ciència i el Medi Ambient (Science and Environment Communication Group)
is a research group from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) which carries out research and training for different
audiences about science and environment education and communication.
The Group’s philosophy, based on the Public Understanding of Science and Public Participation, has generated projects in
science communication during 10 years. Leadered by PhD.Teresa Escalas and PhD Jordi Deulofeu, who are permanent professors
at the UAB,
the Group belongs to the Department of Mathematics and Science Didactics at the Faculty of Science Education of the UAB
where both
future teachers and other professionals related with environment and science communication are trained.
Therefore, the Group fosters a large concept of science education which includes different audiences of society.
The main objective
of these science communication projects is to approach science to the general public and to stimulate the discussion
and participation
around science subjects by incorporating innovative approaches. Most of the projects are sponsored by central and
local governmental
institutions and include:
Preparation of exhibitions for local governments
Organization of courses for specialised and non-specialised audiences
Coordination of the Catalan Strategy for Environmental Education, promoted by the Government of Catalonia
Research based on the evaluation of our products.
One of the publications of the Group is the Llibre Blanc de la Divulgació científica i Tecnològica de Catalunya (White Book of Science and Technology Communication in Catalonia, Fundació Catalana per la Recerca, 1996) which analyses the situation of science communication in Catalonia and where Teresa Escalas and Jordi deulofeu were the two co-author.
